The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art - Alabama's only university art museum - is home to Auburn University's superb permanent collection of American and European art. The nearly 40,000 square foot building offers all the amenities of a modern art museum to thousands of visitors every year. Nestled high on a knoll overlooking a three-acre lake, the museum is located at Auburn's gateway. Among the museum's many architectural features are exterior and interior finishes of the finest travertine stone, a vaulted rotunda visible from the surrounding area and a grand gallery with exhibition areas for decorative arts and small-scale sculpture. The museum gardens present a series of formal gardens that incorporate walking paths, water features and fountains. A number of areas within the gardens are designed for the exhibition of permanently installed, large-scale sculpture.

The museum's expansive Lobby and Rotunda offer a dramatic welcome to museum visitors as they enter the building. Refreshments and light cuisine can be enjoyed in the Museum Cafe which overlooks the museum's lake and adjoins an outdoor terrace. The Museum Shop offers a wide array of quality art objects, posters, museum catalogs, books, postcards and other items for the discriminating shopper. A wide array of special programs including films, lectures and musical performances take place in the museum's 120-seat Auditorium. The Grand Gallery, Rotunda and Lobby-embellished with travertine finishes-provide a large, unified area suitable for a variety of festive occasions, including receptions commemorating the opening of special exhibitions and visiting lecturers.

The museum's eight exhibition galleries are built to the strictest conservation standards. Each of the galleries is specially designed to complement a permanent collection with a reputation as one of the most outstanding in the Southeastern United States. The Louise Hauss and David Brent Miller Audubon Galleries have been specially designed to complement the museum's collection of John James Audubon prints. Decorative arts and sculpture are exhibited in the museum's light-filled Grand Gallery. The intimate Chi Omega-Hargis gallery is constructed to accommodate the most fragile of works on paper. The soaring ceilings of our two main galleries create a space ideal for the exhibition of our permanent collection as well as traveling exhibitions.
